About Massage at Jenna Smith LMT in Crestview
If you’ve ever mentioned a sore neck or a stiff back to someone, chances are you’ve heard, “you should get a massage.” It’s one of the most common suggestions people receive for aches and pains.
As a licensed massage therapist, I am often asked if massage can really help with pain. While massage can be soothing and beneficial for relaxation, its effectiveness for long-term pain relief is limited. The truth is, massage primarily helps with stress reduction and short-term comfort, which is why you must keep getting massage regularly to enjoy any benefit.
Massage therapy has been around for centuries, and it's no surprise why. The soothing touch feels good and the quiet, peaceful atmosphere helps us unwind and find balance in our busy lives. This makes massage a wonderful choice if you're seeking to boost your mood, take a moment for yourself, and nurture your mental health.
However, when it comes to pain relief, massage often falls short. The best available research suggests that while massage might provide short-term relief, its effects on pain are often small and usually temporary. Many of the scientific explanations often cited—such as increased blood flow or the release of toxins—aren't strongly supported by evidence. Although massage can feel great, it is not a long-lasting solution for addressing chronic or acute pain.
From the beginning, my goal as a massage therapist has been to help people feel better and get back to living their lives as quickly as possible. I now recognize that massage is not the most effective option for those struggling with pain. That's why I no longer recommend it as a solution for pain management.
That said, I still offer massage as a way to support your overall well-being. My sessions utilize tools and techniques designed to promote a greater sense of well-being while also soothing everyday aches and pains. If you're seeking relaxation, a mood boost, or soothing touch for general aches, massage is a great choice. But if you truly want to tackle your pain, massage is not the answer.
